New EV Charger Grant Expansion Highlights Growing Demand for Street Works Infrastructure

The Government has introduced a significant boost to its EV charger grant scheme, increasing available funding from £350 to £500 for eligible applicants from April 2026.

The change is designed to help more people switch to electric vehicles, particularly those who have previously faced barriers due to not having access to a private driveway. Renters, flat owners, landlords, businesses, schools and organisations can now access support for EV charging solutions, including innovative options such as cross-pavement charging systems.

The announcement reflects a growing challenge facing the UK’s transition to electric vehicles: providing accessible charging infrastructure for the millions of households without off-street parking.

While grants help make installations more affordable, delivering these solutions often requires careful planning and coordination where public footways and highways are involved. Cross-pavement charging systems, for example, can require highway approvals, utility awareness, excavation works and compliance with local authority requirements.

This is where effective street works management becomes essential.

As demand for EV charging infrastructure continues to grow, contractors and infrastructure providers must ensure works are properly coordinated to minimise disruption, protect existing utilities and meet regulatory requirements.

At Solent Streetworks, we understand the importance of managing the processes that sit behind successful infrastructure projects. From permits and notices to reinstatement management and utility coordination, our team supports contractors in delivering compliant street works efficiently and safely.

The Government’s latest grant expansion is another sign that EV adoption is accelerating across the UK. As charging solutions evolve to serve homes without driveways, the need for well-managed street works and highway coordination will only continue to increase.

For organisations involved in EV infrastructure projects, ensuring the correct street works processes are in place from the outset can help keep installations on track and communities connected.
